Do wood stoves heat a house better than open fireplaces?

My husband wants a fireplace but I think they waste a lot of heat, but I'm not sure if that's really true or if it's just my perception. It's a pretty big house, with a lot of windows and not much insulation, but we have a lot of old dead trees and prunings, plus it's not cold here for very long, but it cold enough to need some sort of heating for a month or two. We are adding insulation as we can afford it, and replacing windows slowly to better quality ones, but I'd like to get some kind of wood burning device in before winter. Thanks for your help!

An open front fireplace is not efficient. If you have glass doors, it will be better. If you add a blower unit, it will be much better. Stoves work better since they are closed and radiate the heat in them. be careful though, and check with your homeowners insurance. I checked and found that a freestanding wood stove would raise my premiums by 10%. A fireplace did not raise it at all.
