Wood Stove Problems! Need Help!?

I have an older wood stove. It says Matherly on the front, if the helps any. My problem is: either with the door open or closed; I cant get it to work properly. Either the fire goes out when I shut the front door, or smoke comes into my garage. I just dont know how to get it to work properly. I have checked the chimney and its clean and clear. Please help!! Thank you
I have checked the damper on my stove. If its open smokes comes out into the garage just a little bit, and if its closed it smokes really bad

Most wood stoves have a vent on the side or top to allow air into the chamber where the burning takes place, this air inside feeds the fire and is necessary, the reason the fire extinguishes is that you haven't enough air flow. Only a small amount of air needs to get in there, a dial or sliding panel like on your BBQ or a panel like a window somewhere can be adjusted so the proper amount of air can enter and fuel the fire.

Some testing will have to be done to regulate the airflow and conserve wood at the same time, you can make it so the wood burns hot and fast or the wood burns long and slow.

As for the build up of smoke, the flue or chimney has to be built in such a way that the smoke gets out without leaking back into the house, and that the heat does not fully escape in the same right.

Metal or fireproof ducting tape makes a good sealant for around the stove and flue/chimney join area, you should wrap the chimney so there is no escaping smoke or gases because you could get carbon monoxide poisoning easily from a poorly ventilated chimney.
